Kingfisher boasts more than 50% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions

Home improvements retailer Kingfisher has reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by just over half, it has announced, ahead of its new ‘Better Homes for Everyone’ report.

The group, which includes brands such as B&Q, Screwfix and TradePort, also said it has exceeded its target to align with Paris Agreement targets to reduce emissions in line with guidance on keeping the global temperature rise to less than 1.5 degrees celsius.

Kingfisher has committed to achieving net zero by 2040, and said it is working towards a target of reducing scope 3 emissions by 40% by 2025.

The business, which is a founding member of the Rainforest Alliance,  also plans to use 100% responsibly sourced wood and paper by 2025/26. Some 95% of its products currently use sustainably produced wood and paper.

Around 47% of Kingfisher’s sales came from its Sustainable Home Products (SHPs) collection this year, which the retailer said is more than double since the initiative began in 2011/12.  Energy and water saving products accounted for 11% of sales.

The brand has a target for 60% of its sales to come from SHPs by the end of 2025.

“Leading the industry in responsible business and energy efficiency is a key part of our ‘Powered by Kingfisher’ strategy. Our purpose is to ‘make better homes accessible for everyone’ and we aim to do that in a way that serves the current and future needs of our communities, colleagues and planet,” said ceo Thierry Garnier.

“Over the last year, we made strong progress across many of our targets. We have made a very good start towards our new ambition to reach net zero operational emissions by 2040, as well as further reducing our scope 3 emissions, which are particularly challenging for retailers to address.”

“Our colleagues are what make our business and we are proud that this year we delivered 2.6 million hours of skills for life learning to help our people reach their full potential.”
