Pizza Pilgrims says gaining B Corp status marks “strategic pillar” for business

Pizza Pilgrims, the pizza business launched from the back of a tuk-tuk in 2012, says achieving its B Corp status marks “a strategic pillar that will influence the current and future business”.

Pizza Pilgrims, which has 20 pizzerias in London and four outside the capital, has joined more than 1,500 companies in the UK with B Corp certification.

Businesses with the certification are required to re-certify every three years.

Pizza Pilgrims was founded by Thom and brother James Elliot who began by selling pizzas at Berwick market in London’s Soho in 2012, amid a growing popularity in street food.

Pizza Pilgrims said it had to display verified performance, accountability and transparency on factors such as employee pay & benefits; engagement with its community; positive practices in the supply chain; and a long-term commitment to reduce its environmental impact, to get the accreditation.

Furthermore, Pizza Pilgrims made a legal commitment by changing their corporate governance structure to be accountable to all stakeholders, not just shareholders.

Founder Thom Elliot said: “Ever since I first read about B Corp – I have felt it is a movement that I want Pizza Pilgrims to be a part of.

“We started the company to be a source of happiness – both for ourselves, but also our employees, customers, and the communities we serve.

“To have B Corp as a hugely credible third-party guide and inspiration for ensuring Pizza Pilgrims is a force for good in the future is an exciting step – and one I am proud to have achieved with the team.”

The pizza business has seen sales rise from £110,000 in 2013 to £21m in the year ending June 2022.

In September last year, Pizza Pilgrims joined forces with all-electric courier Packfleet to provide Londoners with carbon-neutral deliveries.

Other examples of brands recently gaining B Corp status include sustainable cleaning brand Smol and music manufacturer Key Production Group.
