The largest open-air shopping centre in the UK is introducing a recycling facility which sorts co-mingled waste and digitally tracks waste.

Liverpool ONE is installing what is known as a Mobile Segregation Unit (MSU), which aims to boost recycling rates at the shopping, residential, and leisure complex in Liverpool.

Liverpool ONE says it is the first retail destination to use the recycling facility.

The MSU will sort co-mingled waste into fifteen individual waste streams instead of the current five, meaning more items will be recycled.

It also enables the digital tracking of waste and provides access to real time waste data via its technology system.

Supplied by facilities management firm The Green Block, the MSU aims to achieve a recycling rate of 90% of waste by 2025 at Liverpool ONE, significantly improving on the current rate of 41%, and 46% higher than the UK average.

The MSU has previously only been used at major transport hubs in the UK.

Grosvenor’s director Chris Jukes said: “Liverpool ONE has consistently demonstrated it is at the forefront of the industry. The installation of the MSU is another example of Grosvenor’s pioneering approach, and will bring significant environmental and operational benefits.”

in April this year, Liverpool football club said it was making “strides” to help improve the environment, across the three key pillars of people, planet and communities.
