The chief executive of the SBTi is to stand down, amid controversy over the corporate climate target group’s stance on carbon offsets.

Luiz Amaral, who was the SBTi’s first CEO when appointed in 2022, is exiting his role as chief executive of SBTi at the end of this month.

He will be replaced by chief legal officer Susan Jenny Ehr who will step in as interim CEO. Amaral cited personal reasons for his exit.

He said. “These issues require my full attention at this time, prompting my decision to step down.”

He said it was “time for new leadership to take the helm”.

But his departure follows SBTi staff calling for Amaral’s resignation after the organisation said in April that the companies it assesses would be permitted to use carbon offsets at scale to meet climate commitments.

It has proposed to permit their use when “properly supported by policies, standards and procedures based on scientific evidence”.

But staff argued that it would allow companies to buy offsets instead of cutting their emissions.
