River Island has net zero targets validated by SBTi

River Island has become the latest fashion brand to have its net zero targets validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

The fashion retailer has had a raft of emission reduction targets approved by the SBTi, as it looks to enhance its green credentials.

These include a commitment to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 90% by 2030 (from a 2019 base year) as well as a ‘neutralisation’ of residual emissions by 2030 to achieve net zero. The STBi has also validated its pledge to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 30% by 2032 (from a 2021 base year).

Further commitments include reaching net zero carbon emissions by the end of 2040, by reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 90% by 2040 (from 2021 base) as well as a promise to continue sourcing 100% renewable electricity until 2030.

Along with its own pledges, River Island is also asking all of its stakeholders to commit to net-zero targets.

River Island previously joined the British Retail Consortium’s (BRC) Climate Action Roadmap, a commitment to reach net-zero emissions in the fashion industry by 2040.

River Island’s head of sustainability José Arguedas commented: “We are incredibly proud to announce that our net-zero targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.

“Tackling climate change requires ambitious action from the retail sector and our validated science-based targets prove our commitment to building a sustainable economy: by doing not what is easy, but what is necessary.”

Earlier this month, fashion retailer New Look received approval SBTi approval on its emissions targets, all aligned to a 1.5C pathway.
